Laborers' Home Development Corporation

Laborers’ Home Development will continue to expand in the future. We have developed a sound working relationship with the Illinois Housing Development Authority and with private investors.

LHDC has been approved to build a 76 unit affordable supportive living facility in Pekin Illinois. This nearly $6 million state of the art building provides a nursing home alternative for frail elderly that do not need to be in a nursing home environment.

LHDC is also pursuing financing to do substantial rehabilitation at it’s older facilities in Jacksonville and East Peoria. Again, creating good jobs and improving the quality of multi-family and senior housing in Central Illinois.

(PARIS, ILLINOIS) Laborers’ Home Development Corporation (LHDC) broke ground March 12th, commemorating the start of construction for Maple Ridge Apartments, Paris, Illinois’ newest housing development. Maple Ridge Apartments, consisting of 16 buildings with 50 rental units of affordable housing, will offer tenants quality constructed housing with many built-in amenities such as private covered porches, energy rated appliances and high speed internet.

Maple Ridge Apartments will also include a community building with a meeting hall and kitchen facilities as well as a laundry room, a landscaped outdoor playground, an outdoor patio area, private main street and landscaping around dwelling units.

“We are extremely pleased to partner with the city of Paris to build this development,” said LHDC Chairman John F. Penn, “it will add much needed affordable housing for the area as well as provide good paying construction jobs in a tough economy.” Penn said that construction will commence immediately with completion in early 2011.

Paris Mayor Craig Smith called construction of Maple Ridge “a good step toward economic recovery for Paris and all of Edgar County.” Smith went on to thank the Laborers’ Union and the Illinois Housing Development Authority for “sticking with us for past few years to get this off the ground.”

The Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) was instrumental in providing financing through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. Maple Ridge Apartments is the first project funded in the State of Illinois under the new Federal Stimulus programs to finance affordable housing projects.

18 months ago, due to the drop in the tax credit markets, Maple Ridge seemed doomed along with the good paying local jobs it would bring to a city with over 12% unemployment. Now, the $5.8 million development will immediately employ 25 Union construction workers and soon ramp up to 50.

Laborers’ Home Development Corporation, an affiliate of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, is a not-for-profit housing development organization, which provides quality and affordable housing that’s built using 100% Union labor.
